The development of waterborne wood coatings is the general trend

Jun 03, 2020

Our country's wood coatings have a long history of development. After the reform and opening up, the coating of wood furniture has been greatly improved, and the development is extremely rapid. However, after the international financial crisis, the growth of the wood coating market has slowed, and we must rely on new technologies, new processes and new products to restore vitality.

Wooden paint refers to the paint used on wood products, including furniture, doors and windows, wallboards, floors, children's toys, etc. It can be simply divided into furniture wood paint and home improvement wood paint. If divided according to the type of paint, it is divided into solvent-based paint, water-based paint and solvent-free paint; according to the film-forming substance is divided into natural resin and synthetic resin paint.

Wooden coatings are important raw materials in furniture manufacturing. According to the data of "Analysis Report on Investment and Strategic Planning of China's Wood Coatings Industry" provided by Prospective Industry Research Institute, my country's wood coatings account for about 15%-20% of the total coatings. In 2014, my country's wood coatings output was 1.44 million tons; from 2010 to 2014, the compound annual growth rate was 4.97%.

At present, the environmental protection pressure of the coating industry is increasing day by day, and the country has promulgated a number of policies and regulations, which also have a large impact on wood coatings. However, even with increased environmental protection requirements, wood coatings made of solvent-based synthetic resin still occupy the main position.

According to the above report data, solvent-based wood coatings are the absolute mainstream in the market, accounting for more than 95%. This is mainly because the solvent-based wood coatings have excellent construction performance, outstanding physical and chemical properties, and high comprehensive cost performance, but the shortcomings cannot be ignored, such as containing VOCs, polluting the environment, flammable and explosive, and damaging the health of painters.

Relatively speaking, after years of development of waterborne wood coatings, due to consumer habits, coating environment, emulsion price and other factors, the market acceptance has not been high. With the improvement of environmental protection regulations and the awakening of environmental protection awareness, the demand for waterborne wood coatings is expected to grow rapidly.

Developed countries such as the United States, Europe and Japan have now banned the use of solvent-based wood coatings to reduce the environmental impact. In the future, my country is likely to choose to follow up due to environmental pressure. Prior to this, the government, furniture companies, and paint companies jointly promoted the development of waterborne wood coatings.

Therefore, from the perspective of development trends, water-based wood coatings are the main development direction in the field of wood coatings. In the future, it is expected to replace solvent-based wood coatings with cleaning, environmental protection and other characteristics.

In addition, before the performance of the product is much improved, new technologies and new processes need to be used to stimulate demand growth, so that wood coatings can return to the rising channel.
