NEWECO Explains High-performance Epoxy Vinyl Resin Fiberglass To

Jun 19, 2020

Today, I will introduce some principles of high-performance epoxy vinyl resin fiberglass to make impact-resistant helmets and sports equipment. I hope it can help everyone.

According to media reports abroad, the person in charge of the famous helmet company once said that the raw materials used in the previous chemical helmets are all expandable polystyrene. Such helmets can only cope with some small-strength impacts. Vinyl is used as the material, so even if the athlete is subjected to a strong impact, the helmet will quickly return to its original shape, which can protect the athlete more effectively.

In the process of synthesizing and designing resins, in order to improve the impact resistance of the resin, more ether bonds are introduced into the main chain of the molecule, so that its impact resistance will become very good. The impact resistance of ordinary vinyl resins is lower than 14.00KJ/m2, while the newly developed vinyl resins can reach 22KJ/m2 or more. Therefore, it is widely used in sports equipment such as sports sleds.

Vinyl resin has strong corrosion resistance in addition to its impact resistance. Because it contains more secondary hydroxyl groups, it can improve the wettability and adhesion to glass fibers, and when it is impacted by external forces, the degree of stress cracking increases and decreases significantly. Therefore, this characteristic of vinyl resin makes it widely used in applications requiring high mechanical properties and impact resistance. However, conventional vinyl resins, due to their high curing crosslink density and short molecular segments, have far less impact resistance than modified vinyl resins.
